Car Air Conditioning Repair in Calgary, AB

Calgary Car A/C Repair

If your car’s A/C isn’t blowing cold, you want to know whether it’s a quick recharge or real repair work. At Rite-Price Auto Service Centre, we diagnose the system, find the leak or fault, quote upfront, and only fix what’s broken. Most Calgary A/C jobs come in for one of four issues — yours is likely below.

Common A/C Problems We Repair

Most car air conditioning failures in Calgary trace back to a short list of causes.

Refrigerant Leaks

The most common A/C problem we see. The usual suspects are Schrader valves that won’t reseat, O-rings on hose fittings that have shrunk over winter, and condenser pinholes from gravel hitting the front of the car. We pressure-test the system with nitrogen and then trace the leak with UV dye or an electronic refrigerant sniffer.

Compressor Failure

Shows up as clicking at the front of the engine when the A/C switches on — the clutch trying to engage and failing. A seized compressor sounds different: no click, sometimes a serpentine belt squeal. Compressor jobs are typically a full day in the shop.

Blower Motor & Resistor Failures

No air at any fan speed, only the highest setting working, or the fan running intermittently — that’s the blower motor or its resistor pack.

Condenser Damage

Common after Trans-Canada highway driving. The condenser sits behind the front grille and takes direct hits from rocks. A pinholed condenser holds pressure briefly but leaks under load.

We also handle cabin air filters (often misdiagnosed as A/C failure), pressure switches, A/C relays, and wiring faults.

Signs You Need A/C Repair, Not Just a Recharge

Recharging tops up refrigerant. It doesn’t fix anything broken. If any of these symptoms match your car, a recharge just delays the bill:

  • “I recharged it last summer and it’s empty again.” That’s a leak. Recharging without finding the source buys six weeks of cold air, not a fix.
  • Clutch clicking but A/C never engages. The compressor clutch is trying to pull in and failing — often the low-pressure cutoff doing its job because the system is empty.
  • Room-temperature air from every vent. System is empty, the blend door is stuck open to heat, or the compressor isn’t running.
  • Cold from the driver side, warm from the passenger side. Dual-zone blend door actuator. Common failure on GM and Ford trucks.
  • Hissing or gurgling under the dash. Refrigerant moving through a partial restriction — orifice tube or expansion valve.
  • Musty smell when A/C runs. Cabin filter saturated, or the evaporator drain plugged.
  • Wet passenger floor mat. Evaporator drain blocked. Water condensing inside the dash overflows into the cabin instead of draining outside.

Our A/C Repair Process

We don’t quote A/C work blind. The visit runs through six steps:

  1. Book or walk-in. Phone is fastest — (403) 243-4204. Same-day inspection in most cases.
  2. Manifold gauges. We connect to the high and low service ports and read static pressures. That tells us if the system is undercharged, overcharged, or showing a leak signature.
  3. Leak location. If gauges point to a leak, we pressurize with nitrogen and trace the source with UV dye or an electronic refrigerant sniffer.
  4. Quote. Labour and parts broken out separately, written down. The diagnostic fee credits toward the repair if we do the work.
  5. Repair. O-rings, hoses, condenser, compressor, blower motor — whatever the system needs. After install we vacuum-pull the system and recharge to spec.
  6. Drive-out check. We measure vent temperature on the driver’s side. If it isn’t cold, you don’t leave.

Why A/C Repair Matters in Calgary

Calgary’s A/C season is short — mid-May through mid-September. Most drivers ignore a broken system through winter, then discover it’s dead the first +28 °C day in June. By July, every recharge shop in the city has a two-week waitlist, and a quick fix turns into a sweaty commute for half the season. Chinook freeze-thaw cycles also stress the system — hose fittings and O-rings expand and contract, and connections that seemed fine in February start weeping refrigerant by June.

What We Don’t Do In-House

A few A/C jobs are beyond our SE Calgary shop. Full evaporator replacement on dash-out jobs runs 12+ hours of labour on most vehicles — we’ll quote it honestly and may recommend a shop better set up for that work. German vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche) are a referral; their A/C systems use proprietary diagnostic tools we don’t carry. Call (403) 243-4204 with your year, make, and model and we’ll tell you in 60 seconds whether it’s a Rite-Price job.

A/C Repair FAQ

  • Will you recharge the A/C without finding the leak?

Not as a standalone service. If the refrigerant left, it's leaking somewhere, and topping it up without fixing the leak buys you another six weeks of cold air. We'll quote both options so you can weigh the cost.

  • How long does A/C repair take?

Most leak repairs are same-day. Compressor replacements are typically one full day. Evaporator jobs (dash-out) are two days or more, and we usually refer those out. The written quote includes an estimated finish time.

  • Do you offer a warranty on A/C repairs?

Parts are covered by the manufacturer's warranty — typically 12 months on aftermarket compressors, longer on OEM. Our labour is warrantied for 90 days. Bring the car back if anything we touched fails inside that window and we'll make it right.

  • Why did my A/C stop working over the winter?

O-rings shrink when they're not pressurized. A system that sits unused from October to May loses refrigerant slowly through fittings that would seal fine otherwise. Running A/C briefly during winter — defrost mode does it automatically — extends system life.

  • Is the $135 A/C Recharge promo a real fix?

Sometimes. If the system was low from normal slow refrigerant loss, a recharge gets you cold air for the season. If it's near-empty, that's a real leak — a recharge buys weeks, not months. Our seasonal $135 A/C Recharge promo runs through September 1, 2026 (Labour Day) — see the page for full offer details.
